C) Academic Matters

Q1

What are the programme objectives in the MSc (Communication Software and Networks)?

The MSc programme (Communication Software and Networks) is designed to equip graduates with leading-edge knowledge in Networking and Software Engineering for careers in the Info-communication industry. This is achieved through a holistic approach of classroom lectures, hands-on practices and project management.

Q2

What are the unique features in the MSc programme?

The programme focuses on the design and development of communication software and in-depth understanding of computer networks. Unique to this programme is an opportunity for students to hone their project development skills in a software development group project. Students may opt to carry out an individual research project in lieu of the group software development project. These options allow students the flexibility to focus their learning experience in developmental or research works, and to better match their career aspirations in the industries and research organizations.

Q3

I noticed that there is a Full-Time and a Part-Time versions of the same MSc (Communication Software and Networks). What are their differences?

The only difference between the two is their programme structures. Both programmes maintain the same curricular structure and course contents. All lectures are normally conducted in the evening.

Q4

Admission qualifications are considered on a case-by-case basis. Formal degree from a reputed university and trade certificates in relevant fields will be considered along with the relevant working experience. As the MSc programme is cross-disciplinary having experiences in both networking and software engineering will be beneficial.

Q6

I hold a non-engineering/ computer science degree but have relevant coursework and work experience in software development. Am I eligible to apply for this course?

All candidates with a relevant bachelor degree may apply to the MSc (CSN) programme. However, as this is a postgraduate degree, applicants are expected to have the basic relevant course background in networking and software engineering. The admission criteria are much dependent on the qualification of a formal engineering/computer science degree and preferably the relevant experience in networking and software engineering. Holding a BBA, MBA without a qualified basic degree and no relevant experience, as in your case, would not qualify you for admission. You may, however, apply to do a 1-year part-time conversion course in Graduate Diploma in Information Communication Technology (G.Dip ICT).
